CheesiMoon's Dev Talks #2: Revamping Old Code (IG)

 (Archived from @hallegengame IG, 8/11/2022)

Welcome back to Dev Talks! It has been a while since last time. Dev Talks will be our time to talk about our thoughts on Hallegen, and anything else that's potentially relevant.

For today, I wanna go over two things:

1. Why updates have been slowing down

2. Why have there been many significant changes to the game itself compared to what it used to be.

The reason for the somewhat slow updates lately are mostly due to me revamping the engine. A lot of old, ugly, inefficient and iteration-unfriendly code were inside, and thus I had to touch it up. I havent finished going through all of it, as that would take an extremely long time, but I'll leave it as is for now, since now the player character code in particular is a lot nicer to work with.

As for the game itself, there were always features I wanted to implement, but didn't have the finesse to pull them off in a timely manner. One such mechanic was character swapping. Character swapping would make the Hallegen crew feel that much more like a team as they would be able to assist each other while out in the field, and that theme of friendship, cooperation and camaraderie is something I really wanted to include, even way back when. Not to mention the cool gameplay surrounding the action of swapping, notably animation canceling.

All that swapping took a while with a lot of sweat, tears and despair, but it actually got finished with little to no compromises!

Another issue that arose were the weak gameplay identity regarding the abilities of Hemi and Acro. I didn't have a strong gameplay identity planned going into their kits, which I plan to rectify, alongside having their abilities be able to support their teammates. That's why Acro now has throwing machetes, as well as new special attacks for both Hemi and Acro. Now, Hemi will become a melee warrior with spells that enhance her close range game, and Acro will be an air striking ranged specialist with melee options. More of that info will be shown off hopefully this week! I'm excited to show these off as this'll make the game a lot more fun in my opinion. Thanks for tuning in, and we here greatly appreciate your time and support!
